I mentioned the brand spanking new version of mac os x (1.5) Leopard, in my last entry.
However, immersion takes a while, and this is the first day that I actually swam like a fish with spaces.
Here’s how it works IRL. Spaces lets your have more than one desktop. The files don’t move, but everything else does. What I did to make everything work automatically, was setting up spaces thouroughly in system preferences. Like which apps go where when launched.
Space#1 :
iChat, Mail, Adium, Stickies, Skype and Address Book. In other words, pretty much averything to do with communication.
Space#2 :
Safari. This is my casual web surfing couch
Space#3 :
iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, basically my iLife petri dish.
Space#4 :
Coda, FireFox, DashCode, iWeb, PixelMator which are basically all my tools (right now) when getting geeky. (ode to firebug)
My take on it:
it works! in fact it works GREAT! It’s like awakening an ancestor of Exposé, the missing link that makes for total multitasking without the clutter of a 100 open windows.
my verdict: WAUW!
Noteworthy is that DashBoard is Omnipresent and files on the desktop acts like an anchor and don’t change when changing “rooms”. This will probably be one of the first spaces hack, since this is like a relic feature to all unix people. Just a guess.
Also noteworthy is the fact that a 1.st gen. MacBook w.2GB ram, does NOT run Leopard smoothly, when connected to a 23″ display, even though i’m running in closed-lid mode. So much for shared graphics memory!
Leopard does runs faster than Tiger though the experience is not all perfect. A whole lot less spinning beachball, but choppy animation. And so what? you might argue. Why is this a problem? Well, 10.5 is all about evolution of the interface and as such i expected it to be as snappy as an iPod. Its not.
My system is maxed to the bone, and is only about a year old! And even though my laptop mostly sounds like a hairdryer i expected more…
